World Regions in Global Context: Peoples, Places, and Environments (6th Edition), by Sallie A. Marston, Paul L. Knox, Diana M. Liverman, V

For courses in world regional geography.

Conceptual Exploration of World Regions and the Myriad Issues Critical to Geography Today

World Regions in Global Context presents a strong global sensibility and an emphasis on current events, with examples of interdependent development, spatial and social inequality, and questions of spatial justice. The authors maintain that regions are the outcomes of the twin forces of globalization and regionalization. Therefore, each regional chapter stresses the global systems of connection that drive unique regional processes, making regions different. By studying regions, students not only learn the critical elements of different places, but also come to understand the fundamental processes that drive change.

The Sixth Edition is a briefer, more visual text that still maintains its conceptual rigor by addressing today’s critical geographic themes, incorporating deeper focus on sustainability issues, new human stories from the regions, cutting-edge data visualizations and infographics, including a completely modernized cartography program, and much more.

Teachers should look for a different book to teach their class about this subject.
By Innovater
I am renting this book and it came in very good condition. I do not like the way this book reads, but that is my professor's fault for picking it. I am taking this class online and have found that this book as well as the one for our regional geography class read the same. A little difficult because it is all factual and does not read as easy as some of my psychology books. The authors don't try to relate the info or make it personal, they just state it and it's hard to remember everything because nothing sticks out to you. If I had a choice, I would look for a different book for the students that is more clear and points out important info, because reading this book is like reading a dictionary and then being tested on definitions after every letter. The information is all in the book, but there is so much that it is impossible to memorize it all, so you have to be quick at recalling page numbers and using post-its or flipping through the glossary.

This book was boring and difficult to get through...
By The Don Vito
I bought the 4th edition and probably could have used that and still gotten an A in the class with very little online supplementation. Nevertheless, this book was boring and difficult to get through. When I took Geography in High School I did not know it included so much. High School seemed to divide these topics into bite-sized portions like World History and Politics/ American gov't. This text book blurs the lines of all those and then some:
Economics
Weather
History
Politics
Geography
Education
Religion
and much more...
These topics are covered in every chapter for each region and it was a little much for me to absorb... especially in the beginning.

It's a textbook
By Gavin
It is a decent textbook. There really isn't much to say but I will go so far as to say if you can get by with not having textbooks for your classes then DO IT. It'll save you money. But if you need it, Amazon is the way to go.

Cyber Crime, Security and Digital Intelligence, by Mark Johnson

Today's digital economy is uniquely dependent on the Internet, yet few users or decision makers have more than a rudimentary understanding of the myriad of online risks that threaten us. Cyber crime is one of the main threats to the integrity and availability of data and systems. From insiders to complex external attacks and industrial worms, modern business faces unprecedented challenges; and while cyber security and digital intelligence are the necessary responses to this challenge, they are understood by only a tiny minority. In his second book on high-tech risks, Mark Johnson goes far beyond enumerating past cases and summarising legal or regulatory requirements. He describes in plain, non-technical language how cyber crime has evolved and the nature of the very latest threats. He confronts issues that are not addressed by codified rules and practice guidelines, supporting this with over 30 valuable illustrations and tables. Written for the non-technical layman and the high tech risk manager alike, the book also explores countermeasures, penetration testing, best practice principles, cyber conflict and future challenges. A discussion of Web 2.0 risks delves into the very real questions facing policy makers, along with the pros and cons of open source data. In a chapter on Digital Intelligence readers are provided with an exhaustive guide to practical, effective and ethical online investigations. Cyber Crime, Security and Digital Intelligence is an important work of great relevance in today's interconnected world and one that nobody with an interest in either risk or technology should be without.

About the Author
Becky is a freelance writer and cultural critic living in Portland, Oregon. For Lonely Planet, she has written about Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, the Great Plains states of the US, parts of England and Wales, and n primarily n Sweden. Becky grew up with a thick book of Swedish fairy tales illustrated by John Bauer, so the deep black forests of Norrland hold particular fascination for her. Hiking through them, she's alert for trolls and tomtes (which, to the untrained eye, look just like big rocks). Though raised in the mountains of Colorado, Becky has been exploring Sweden since childhood, while visiting her grandparents and other relatives in Stockholm and parts north. She's thoroughly hooked on pickled herring and saffron ice cream but has nothing good to say about Swedish beer. About ten years ago, having exhausted the potential of the role of copy editor at an alternative weekly newspaper in Portland, Becky spent the requisite year bumming around Europe on the mega-cheap. This did nothing to quell her urge to run off exploring new places every couple of months; quite the opposite. She has since spent time roaming around in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England, Beijing, Panama, Mexico, and most of the US. In 2009 Becky rode a 30-year-old Honda SL175 motorcycle from Portland, Ore., to Knoxville, Tenn., with the infamous 555 crew and wrote about the experience for Cycle World magazine. She reviews movies on KBOO 90.7 FM radio in Portland and writes about books, food and miscellany for anyone who lets her. She's the lone female member of the Sang-Froid Riding Club and serves on the Portland Motorcycles & Scooters Citizen Advisory Committee. She has a master's degree in journalism from NYU's Cultural Reporting and Criticism program, and she's currently working on a book about motorcycles and the paradoxical appeal of risk.

GOOD BUT NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS OTHER LONELY PLANET BOOKS
By Jack E. Levic
I bought the current editon of LONELY PLANET CYPRUS when I made my plans to visit Cyprus. A few weeks later, this new edition was released so I also purchased this version. This new version had a few improvements and changes. There were more useful pictures. The pictures in the previous edition were not inspiring. Also, there were changes in the format such as the accommodations section was no long included with each city listing but rather they were all lumped together at the back of the book. I did not like this change since it meant flipping back and forth between the city information and the accommodation listing.
Although, there was plenty of useful information in this book, I felt it was lacking on several levels. The authors seem to feel that the ONLY way to see Cyprus is by car so they skimp on information on Intercity and local buses and other ways to see the country. I had to get the information on my own. Pafos especially was full of day tours offered for the entire country. It would have been good to have some guidance and direction ahead of time on where to look for tours.
I found myself seeking out information on my own more than with other editions of LONELY PLANET. The small maps included were not as detailed as I would have liked. I chose a hotel in Pafos based on the recommendation of LONELY PLANET. I was more than pleased with the hotel but I had trouble finding it based on the map in the book.
The LONELY PLANET guides are my favorite travel tools. I was a bit disappointed in this edition and for once found myself relying more on the EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE that I also brought with me.

DIsappointed Lonely Planet Fan
By Michael P Griffith
I'm a Lonely Planet fan and didn't think twice about grabbing this guide. Unfortuantely, I was incredibly disappointed by the guide. I've used Lonely Planet guides frequently for navigation purposes, but they were insufficiently detailed for my trip. The restaurant recommendations for Pafos were abysmal. Thinking I was in for a quaint local fish restaurant, my cab dropped me off at a dump that sold over priced, overcooked fish, passing up several interesting looking restaurants on the way. The hiking guides were not organized in a way that was condusive for planning a quick day hike, leading me to just skip it. Restaurant recommendations in Nicosia were outdated, limited, and unimaginative. I'd recommend checking other guides out before using this one.

Pretty much the expected stuff from Lonely Planet
By phormion
I've traveled with quite a few LP guides and this one is pretty much within the brand's standards - lots and lots of info, not so much focused on sights and superficial tourism, and with some good suggestions for off track exploring. Quite a bit of stuff about North Cyprus, too - I'd really like to get to Girne/Kyrenia some time. Also, they have good background info about the North-South conflict, in case you are interested - I certainly am.

Of course, there'll always be details that are "in the eye of the visitor". I don't care much for stuff like the Rock of Aphrodite; of course, you can't just leave it out, but I do like when LP writers are critical about certain over-appreciated sights.

However, I liked the Ireland Kindle guide I got in that it had Google Maps links for all locations besides the mostly useless Kindle maps. The most useful maps on the Amazon device (probably different on a DX, though) were those split in 4 parts that you could zoom in, and that was sort of readable (I forget which guide that was in). The PDF maps compensate for that somewhat, although I haven't tried them on my device, where pretty much any PDF is hard to read. You probably need a laptop or a better tablet to use them, or, well, printing them would also do

Also, there's something of a section mismatch - in "Itineraries", "One week - Relaxing in the Republic" is the same as the previous one ("One Week - Essential Northern Cyprus"), so people looking for a quick plan for a week in the South might be disappointed :).

Disclaimer: we had arrangements made for lodging and ate at a friend's place, so I can't vouch for the food & accommodation part.

A Publishers Weekly Top Ten Book of 2013

Award-winning investigative reporter Robert Kolker delivers a humanizing account of the true-life search for a serial killer still at large on Long Island, and presents the first detailed look at the shadow world of online escorts, where making a living is easier than ever and the dangers remain all too real. A triumph of reporting, a riveting narrative, and "a lashing critique of how society and the police let five young women down" (Dwight Garner, New York Times), Lost Girls is a portrait of unsolved murders in an idyllic part of America, of the underside of the Internet, and of the secrets we keep without admitting to ourselves that we keep them.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, July 2013: As you might expect from the story of a serial killer who preys on prostitutes, the young women in Robert Kolker’s enthralling Lost Girls were already, in many ways, lost. Prostitutes and runaways, their murders might have easily elicited a what-did-they-expect shrug. (Certainly that’s how the police at times seemed to handle the case). What sets Lost Girls apart is Kolker’s empathetic and detailed portrayals of the victims, based on hundreds of hours of interviews with their families and friends. This is an impressive and impassioned work of investigative journalism, and a chilling commentary on the entangled influences of economics, race, technology and politics on sex and murder in the Internet age. Kolker, a reporter for New York magazine, is that rare-breed journalist who latched onto a difficult story and refused to let go. In this haunting tale, he bravely and meticulously recreates the lives of once hopeful but sadly forgotten young women, while shining a light on the economic hardships that pushed them to make tough, risky choices. A colleague told me that after finishing Lost Girls she spent hours researching the victims and the case online. Her warning to me is my promise to you: Be prepared to obsess. --Neal Thompson

Review
“Kolker is a careful writer and researcher...[he paints] a far more nuanced picture of each young woman than any screaming headline could.” (Miami Herald)

“Through extensive interviews with the victims’ families and friends, Kolker creates compassionate portraits of the murdered young women, and uncovers the forces that drove them from their respective home towns into risky, but lucrative, careers as prostitutes in a digital age.” ( New Yorker )

“Captivating.” (Boston Globe)

“Robert Kolker unflinchingly probes the 21st-century innovations that facilitated these crimes… ...An important examination of the socioeconomic and cultural forces that can shape a woman’s entry into prostitution.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Beautifully and provocatively written.... [Lost Girls] will make all but the hardest-hearted empathetic. Add a baffling whodunit that remains, as the subtitle indicates, unsolved, and you have a captivating true crime narrative that’s sure to win new converts and please longtime fans of the genre.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Robert Kolker’s LOST GIRLS is reportage at the highest level; it’s miss-your-bedtime storytelling… It’s a wonder.” (Darin Strauss, author of Half A Life)

“Lost Girls is a marvelous book, taking a complicated, trying story and making it compulsively readable. Kolker is an outstanding reporter and a sensitive narrator who does justice to a horrible tragedy by paying exactly the kind of attention that no one else did, or would.” (Nick Reding, author of Methland)

“The absence of the killer is the making of this book, a constraint that allows it to become extraordinary…humane and imaginative…[Kolker] shows the dented magnificence and universal sorrow within ordinary lives, and makes you realize how much more they are worth.” ( Laura Miller, Salon )

“Kolker indulges in zero preaching and very little sociology; his is the lens of a classic police reporter. And often in Lost Girls, the facts are eloquent in themselves.” (Newsday)

“Some true crime books are exploitative…others grasp at serious literature. Robert Kolker’s new book falls into the latter category.” (New York Observer)

“Readers expecting an SVU-style true-crime story will be disappointed. But through detailed profiles of the victims themselves, Kolker has written a more provocative book—a book that is as much about class and economic pressures as it is about sex work and murder.” ( The Daily Beast )

“Meticulously reported and beautifully written, Robert Kolker’s Lost Girls is a haunting and powerful crime story that gives voice to those who can no longer be heard. It is a story that you will not be able to forget.” (David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z)

“A gothic whodunit for the Internet age…nearly unputdownable…[LOST GIRLS is] a horrific, cautionary tale that makes for a very different kind of beach read…Kolker expertly chronicles the sad cycle of poor, uneducated white women faced with lots of kids and few resources.” (Mimi Swartz, New York Times Book Review)

“Rich, tragic...monumental...true-crime reporting at its best.” (Washington Post)

“Engrossing...a car-crash of a book...By humanizing the women, Mr. Kolker has produced a subtle indictment of the sex trade.” ( Nina Burleigh, New York Observer )

“A heart-chilling non-fiction tour-de-force...terrifying and intensely reported.” ( Complex Magazine )

“A rare gem of a book that not only tells a riveting story but illuminates something about a slice of America and gets into a lot of very deep issues. Its really great on every front.” ( Slate, DoubleX )

“Riveting and often heartbreaking...a lashing critique of how society, and the police, let these young women down.” ( Dwight Garner, New York Times )

“Immensely evocative...we are left with is a visceral understanding of the lives of the victims and why they should have mattered more.” ( New York Daily News )

“Terrific...vivid and moving...Grade: A-” ( Entertainment Weekly )

“So masterful.” ( Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me , via Twitter )

“By learning the intimate details of the women’s lives, seeing them as humans rather than victims, we see our similarities…Lost Girls is possibly the realest, fullest picture of what is happening with sex work in the US right now.” (The Guardian (UK))

“Kolker does not hold back in addressing the fact that there was dysfunction in these women’s lives. They were drug addicts and teenage mothers and petty criminals. They suffered. But he can also see that within those circumstances they had moments of strength and self-assurance. ” (Barnes & Noble Review )

“Lost Girls is partly unsolved mystery...[partly]the intimate story of the five women… [and] a case study in the profound impact of the Internet, and particularly Craigslist, on the business of buying and selling sex.” (National Post (Canada))

The unsolved murders of five marginalized victims
By TChris
In December 2010, the remains of four young women were found buried in Oak Beach, a community in one of New York's barrier islands. The women all worked as escorts, as did a fifth woman whose body was discovered later. They all disappeared between 2007 and 2010. Arguing that these lost girls do not deserve to be stereotyped and forgotten simply because they engaged in prostitution, Robert Kolker brings them back to life in a book that is dedicated to telling their stories, if not to solving the mystery of their killer(s).

A pregnant high school dropout at sixteen, Maureen went through a series of dead-end jobs and failed relationships. A hair stylist in training who did well in high school, Melissa saw a path out of Buffalo when a man (who turned out to be a pimp) offered her a job cutting hair in a New York barbershop. Rebellious, impossible to control, and marked as white trash, Megan was impregnated by a thirty-two year old when she was seventeen. Sexually abused as a child, Amber eventually joined her sister at an escort service because the workers provided her with a sense of family. All of the women advertised on Craigslist and disappeared after making appointments with unidentified clients.

Raised in a series of foster homes, Shannon worked for an escort agency that catered to high-end clients before the police put it out of business. She also turned to Craigslist. Her last appointment was in Oak Beach. Unlike the other lost girls, Shannon made quite a scene before she disappeared, running around Oak Beach screaming and banging on doors, perhaps frightened by something, perhaps suffering from cocaine psychosis. She called 911 but got no help from the police. Her client that night was Joe Brewer. When the remains of four women were found buried at regular intervals along an Oak Beach highway, Brewer became a person of interest. Shannon's body, however, was not one of the four. Her skeleton was found a year later. Whether she was murdered or accidentally drowned in a marsh is unknown; the autopsy was inconclusive, although it seems to have been less than thorough.

Once the police started digging, they found several more bodies. How many of the bodies are connected to the same killer is unclear. Some have never been identified. Rumors identified a variety of suspects, from Long Island clammers to New York cops, from pimps to "my ex-husband" (two of those, actually). Kolker reports stronger reasons to be suspicious of a doctor who made an odd phone call in which he claimed to have seen Shannon, then denied making the call before admitting the call but disclaiming any knowledge of Shannon. Strange behavior, yes, but far from proof of guilt. Kolker also reports a variety of (mostly farfetched) conspiracy theories that took root in the insular world of Oak Beach, with its petty jealousies and backstabbing neighbors.

Lost Girls is thoroughly researched and easy to read, but it doesn't solve the crimes. Then again, neither did the police. One of Kolker's strongest themes is the indifference of law enforcement to crimes committed against prostitutes. Escorts never receive the same attention as advantaged girls from wealthy families who go missing. When Melissa disappeared, the police ignored her missing persons report for ten days because (as they candidly admitted) they are unconcerned about hookers who can't be found. The police in Suffolk County laughed when Shannon's boyfriend reported her disappearance. At least initially (before the bodies were discovered), the investigative work by family members (which Kolker describes in detail) was more thorough than any efforts made by the police. Still, some family members seemed to be exploiting the tragedies for their own benefit, basking in the attention they received as the mother or sister of a crime victim. The sections of the book that depict family members sniping at each other are among the most interesting. The chief of detectives who investigated the case, on the other hand, resents the pressure he received from family members and condemns the victims for being "greedy." There are no heroes in Lost Girls, but the least heroic are all the police officers who didn't think potential crimes against missing prostitutes were important enough to investigate. Even worse are those who blame the prostitutes, who imply that they deserved to die.

Of course, once the bodies were discovered and it became likely that a serial killer was responsible, the talking heads of crime media descended like vultures. Kolker has done a credible and detached job of reporting, unlike many of the media sensationalists who reported the story, particularly Nancy Grace, who made factual pronouncements with absolute certainty despite knowing none of the facts. Pundits busied themselves making monsters out of any plausible suspects while exploiting the tears shed by the victims' families to boost ratings.

As is often true of book-length investigative journalism, we are sometimes treated to facts that seem like filler, including the history of Oak Brook and biographical details of pimps and drivers who play only a collateral role in the crime story. On the other hand, Kolker offers a compassionate glimpse of the difficult and dangerous life that prostitutes live, and includes a balanced (but too brief) discussion about whether Craigslist provides a useful service or causes social harm by permitting escorts to advertise. Most importantly, Kolker encourages readers to see prostitutes as individuals. They don't all have the same story. They haven't all been trafficked or abused. They come from different family backgrounds and have different attitudes about their work. Perhaps the one thing that unites them is their vulnerability to crime in a society that marginalizes their existence. Apart from its objective reporting of an unsolved mystery, that theme makes The Lost Girls worth reading.

A Necessary Book
By Oliveira
I read Robert Kolker's "Lost Girls" in one sitting, so immersed was I with this "unsolved American mystery." I would urge you to read it as soon as you can, but first let me give you a few reasons why you should. Without trying to give too much away, let me describe you (partially) the main narrative of Kolker's story. Almost the first half of the book is concerned with the story of four young women: one chapter narrating their personal histories (with their actual names) and the other recounting their descend into prostitution (with their respective pseudonyms). Briefly, these are their stories:

- Maureen/Marie: A telemarketer who wishes to be a poet, or a song composer for rap artists. Unable to launch her career, she is astonished by the amount of money that escorts (working for certain agencies) can actually make. Maureen sees Craigslist as an opportunity to make money without having to pay escort services.

- Melissa/Chloe: A girl whose dream is to open a hair-salon, she grows up in Buffalo, NY, in a neighborhood where hers is one of the only white families. "The race thing was a peculiar subject for all of them." Melissa feels like she was born on the wrong body since she wants to be black. That is why she finds herself a black boyfriend, a boy involved in drug dealing, and moves to NYC.

- Shannan/Angelina: Diagnosed as bipolar, and described by her mother as "independent-minded," Shannan decides to grow up in a series of foster homes rather than with her mother. Seeking to have "the best of everything," Shannan wants to pursue a singing career and also moves to NYC.

- Megan/Lexi: As a child, growing up in Portland, ME, Megan becomes the perfect example of misbehavior. She is raised by her father and her father's girlfriend, who gain custody over her mother, and is diagnosed with ADHD. Pregnant at an early age, and unable to pay the bills and feed the baby, Megan is in urgent need of a well-paid job.

- Amber/Carolina: She grows up in North Carolina and experiences a trauma that will haunt her for the rest of her days. She ends up joining Coed Confidential, an escort agency, and her story becomes (at least in my opinion) one of the most interesting in the whole book.

What follows is a roller coaster ride of an investigation. The second part of the book is not divided by the victims stories but rather by the evidence found after the murders. Perhaps what turns out to be the most attractive element of the book is its own structure: it made me think of Rodolfo Walsh, the Argentine writer/journalist, with some inevitable hints to Capote. (Especially the beginning seems to me highly reminiscent of Capote.)

As TChris, the previous reviewer, has very perceptively stated, one of the main themes is the civil/legal differences that exist between prostitutes and wealthy people. Citing a book by criminologist Steve Egger, Kolker asserts that almost 78 percent of female victims to serial killers turn out to be prostitutes. What is more terrifying is that these victims are not reported to be missing until their bodies are discovered.

Although some digressions may appear unnecessary, because they don't seem to add anything to the main narrative of the story, I found those "side stories" to be extremely informative. For example, the historical account of "the exchange of sex for money," or prostitution, from colonial times to contemporary America. Another theme of Kolker's seems to be the terrible effect that the internet (and especially sites such as Craigslist) has had on prostitution: "In the few years that the website had caught on, Craigslist had done more to delegitimize the age-old system of pimps and escorts than a platoon of police officers could."

One of the most harrowing "digressions," however, happens when reporters approach Joel Rifkin, Long Island's most famous and prolific murderer, for his opinion on the case. While critiquing the new killer for leaving all the bodies in one place, Rifkin declares, "America breeds serial killers. You don't see any from Europe."

Kolker's book is a testament to the power of good journalism: its story resonates with us because it is immediate, urgent, necessary, something that fiction is not always able to accomplish.

I grant it five stars (despite its sometimes long, not-so-necessary digressions) because of the urgency in its description of present day America and its "exclusions": namely, the underworld of prostitution.

Highly recommended.

One of the best investigative TC books in years
By Elisabeth Young
I just finished Kolker's "Lost Girls" and I had to go back and reread several passages because I didn't want the book to end. This book is absolutely fascinating and extremely well researched. Each of the five most recent victims has their story told with sensitivity and grace. The families of the women must have really opened up to the author because their most intimate stories are told here. The fact the killer(s) is still out there adds to the suspense of the book. I really disagree with the reviewer on here who felt the author wasn't connected enough with the police. As I pointed out under his review, how much can the police tell an investigative journalist when the crimes remain unsolved? The reviewer also found fault with how much the Internet and Facebook were referenced but the web is actually a center player in these cases and FB is how people communicate. FB provided the author with a wealth of information on how the friends and families of the victims felt minute by minute in their own words. The crimes keep me up at night as I try to figure out whether Shannan Gilbert was a victim of the same "Long Island" serial killer or just a coincidental isolated murder (or as the police continue to allege) an unfortunate accident? Does this killer reside in Oak Beach and if so, why can't he be caught? What are his connections to New York City and Oak Beach? Why did Dr. Peter Hackett insert himself into this case? The questions go on and we can only hope a resolution can be found for the families of these young women. The fact they were escorting on Craigslist makes them no less important or missed by their loved ones. An intriguing book that should be missed by no avid TC reader.

Describes every kind of technique
By Minnesott Sailor
They weren't kidding when they named this book the Ultimate Guide to Guitar Techniques. This book was a great purchase for me. It introduced me to numerous techniques. I could not do a pull off, but after sticking with it, I'm doing the all the time. This book addressed the concept of downward pressure as it applies to the fretting notes with your left hand. The exercises have helped me tremendously. I can stretch, minimize movement and I'm gaining more and more finger independence. This book is defiitely the book that every guitarist should have because it is a bible of guitar techniques. I highly recommend this book. Even if the exercises get a little difficult, I stick with it and, "voila", suddenly, I have it down and it has become a part of my playing style. More than I expected.
