Actually contains Damn Good Advice
By Julien Smith
I've recently been re-reading the books that have been influential to my work and writing, so after giving away a few copies of Paul Arden's Phaidon books (Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite; It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be), I ended up buying them again from the local bookstore and grabbing this one at the same time. I didn't know it had been recently published but am pleased I get to write one of the first reviews for it.

I didn't know anything about George Lois when I read this book. Previous reviews were full of discussions of his egomania and self-aggrandizement but that doesn't matter to me. All that matters is whether this book does, in fact, contain Damn Good Advice. Well, it does.

This book isn't perfect, but if you're up to short books that give you a certain feeling rather than information, this could be the one. It's ten bucks, and for that price I can either get an expensive drink at a horrible bar, or I can spend a Sunday morning reading about someone's exploits and what they've learned. I did the latter, and you should too.

Reading Damn Good Advice reminded me of a lot of things that everyone needs to be reminded of: to stand up for what you believe in, to have faith in yourself even against the odds, and lots of things we tend to forget when we get caught in the tedium of our daily life.

It'll probably end up being one of those books I end up reading once a year, to get that feeling again. Maybe you should too.

Isn't it ironic?...
By Melissa
...that the man who goes on and on about the Big Idea, the self-proclaimed master of originality, has gone and written a book that is basically just a poor copy of the very successful Paul Arden books.
Note of caution: don't be fooled by this poor imitation. George Lois has written what is basically one big congratulatory pat on the back. Sure, he obviously did some pretty great stuff way back in the days when there wasn't much in the world of advertising to compete with but the way he puts that across just makes him sound like a candidate for 'the person you'd least like to invite to a dinner party'. The anecdotes mostly go something like this: "So we were in the room, and this guy says something SO stupid and I say *insert self-important quip that only George Lois finds amusing*". That's pretty much it. Buy the Paul Arden book with the money I just saved you and read something that is informative, witty and interesting instead.

Awful, awful book
By bimwa
I was unfortunate enough to receive this book as a present, I think the person just had a quick look at the cover and figured it might provide some helpful creative ideas. A shame they didn't even flip through the first few pages, because they would have immediately seen what an unlikeable person George Lois is and how his writing is not only arrogant, but just plain ignorant too.

The book is basically a list of 120 numbered pieces of 'advice' which are actually mostly just stories of how amazing George Lois thinks he is - yes you can do it too, you just have to be as full of yourself as George Lois. At the top of each piece is a supposedly cute or profound little catchphrase such as 'Follow your bliss' or 'Always go for The Big Idea' which sums up the following text. Unfortunately rather than being cute or profound they are either blatantly obvious, incredibly cliched, or sometimes just plain nonsensical.

Not to mention that many of these ideas contradict each other. I imagine that Lois just threw together the book to make a quick buck and it didn't really matter if one idea was compatible with the next. Probably the piece de resistance is #103, after repeatedly patting himself on the back in the previous 102 items, he writes 'Never act cocky'!!! He tries to excuse his own cockiness by saying he's not cocky, he's 'cocksure', obviously not realising that the two words are synonyms.

When I got to the one about forcing yourself to sleep less, I thought that maybe I had got it wrong and I was actually reading a parody! But sadly no, this guy is simply a lunatic.

Strangely enough, my copy of the book actually has a sickening smell! Coincidence? In any case, this gives me another reason not to read it, if I needed one...

From School Library Journal
YA. These nine short stories, never before published in the U.S., offer a variety of mysterious doings, intriguing characters, and odd circumstances. Christie's complex plots, her historical and moral perspectives, and her strong interest in human psychology are the major factors setting the tone of these selections. "The Harlequin Tea Set" weaves psychological drama with a ghost story, creating a surreal atmosphere and an extraordinary ending. Several of the stories, while interesting, are familiar in plot and character and offer no real surprises. "The Lonely God" is a love story typical of the sentimental writing of the period. "Manx Gold" is a grand adventure with several murders spicing up the plot. Christie captures cultural and period details in a way that readers can easily assimilate, making these stories time-capsule views of life during the first third of this century. This collection continues to substantiate the author's ability to create imaginative plots and characters, proving that really good writing remains readable for countless years.?Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Library Journal
This welcome collection contains nine stories, most of which were published only in British newspapers and magazines during the 1920s. Hercule Poirot and Harley Quin make appearances, as do more "normal" people dealing with murder.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
These never-before-collected Christie stories were originally published in magazines of the times, and the majority of them were written before Dame Agatha was at the top of her game. Most of the nine tales (though not the one Poirot) focus on human nature rather than true mystery and bristle with melodrama (one can almost hear organ music crashing in the background). Christie's many fans (two billion copies of her books are in print) may not find these stories to be hearty fare, but as tea cookies, they will satisfy. Ilene Cooper

9 stories, 8 of which are rare
By Michele L. Worley
Most of the stories herein have not appeared in previous collections after their original magazine publications; apart from the "The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" and the title story, none feature any of Christie's stable of recurring characters.
Jack Leavitt makes the mistake of trying to blackmail "The Actress" (1923, Novel). 'Olga Stormer' - formerly Nancy Taylor - is *very* quick-witted, and came up through a tough school. She remembers Leavitt - and intends to turn the tables on the lever of his cowardice.
"While the Light Lasts" (1923, Novel) (The use of language at the beginning of the story is unintentionally funny - the phrase 'boy lover', for instance.) George Crozier has never properly understood that Deirdre broke their engagement to marry Tim Nugent for love, but married *him* for the material comforts he offered her, after Tim died in WWI. During their visit to one of George's business interests in Rhodesia, Deirdre notes a text on her dowdy hostess' wall that, of course, doesn't apply to her: 'What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?'
Alan Everard's little daughter asks him a riddle: '"Within a Wall" (1925, Royal) as white as milk, within a curtain soft as silk, bathed in a sea of crystal clear, a golden apple doth appear.' He absently answers 'your mother' - Isobel, the penniless society beauty who married him, a genius painter, rather than a wealthy man. But she has a taste for the good life, and a certain cold calculation...(The 'correct' answer is 'an egg', incidentally.)
"The Lonely God" (1926, Royal) really *is* a god - a small, forgotten idol, head in his hands, on a shelf in the British museum, without even a plaque bespeaking his name or country of origin. Then the unlikeliest chance befalls him: Frank Oliver, lonely after spending his life in the farthest reaches of the Empire, notices him, and feels a kinship to another stranger in a strange land.
"The House of Dreams" (1926, Sovereign) Fantasy more than mystery. John Segrave comes of a socially prominent family fallen on hard times - he makes an adequate living as a clerk, but isn't a likely candidate for promotion. There's more to him than meets the eye, but he isn't interested in forming relationships. Then the boss' daughter takes a fancy to him - but John falls for her 'court jester' Allegra rather than for her. But something's wrong behind Allegra's lovely facade, just as there's something ominous about the lovely white house haunting John's dreams.
"The Edge" (1927, Pearson's) Claire Hailiwell always expected her childhood friendship with Gerald Lee to end in marriage - but Gerald married Vivien Harper after a whirlwind courtship, and was thick enough to expect them to be friends afterward. The relationships don't quite play out as the reader might expect. :)
"Manx Gold" (1930, The Daily Dispatch) This was written to support a _Masquerade_-style treasure hunt on the Isle of Man, which in turn was part of a scheme to boost tourism. The story itself is a missing legacy story - i.e., uncle hid the majority of his assets and our heroes must unravel the puzzle he set them in his will. The narrator and his first cousin Fenella have an intermittent engagement (depending on their finances), and uncle Myles pepped up matters by 1) *also* notifying 2 other relatives, both unscrupulous, but 2) giving the lovebirds 24 hours' start. The 4 'treasures' in the real life contest were hidden where the treasures in the story were found, so the story is at first rather obscure about exactly where our heroes located the snuffbox treasure chests.
"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" (a.k.a. "The Mystery of the Bagdad Chest") is a Poirot story that appears in other collections, such as _The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories_.
"The Harlequin Tea Set" (1971) is one of the few Satterthwaite and Quin stories not collected in _The Mysterious Mr. Quin_, mainly because it takes place in the early 1970s - forty years after their last meeting in 'Harlequin's Lane' - so it's not surprising that while the sight of a Harlequin tea set in a shop window reminds Satterthwaite of something, it takes him a little thought to recall exactly what.

Nice Reads, But Not What I Was Looking For
By Muse From Afar
If good ol' Agatha Christie murder mysteries are what you after, this isn't the collection for you. Without a doubt, each of them are intriguing, and thrilling at times, but they were lacking in what I've come to expect from the "Queen of Crime." Harlequin Tea Set is an anthology of rare Christie short stories, perfect for an avid collector. Not so good for me, I think.

Not to say that I truly disliked any of the stories. But when you're a die-hard murder mystery addict like I am, stories of love, betrayal, and the like aren't what you want coming from Christie. My favorite was the only true murder mystery, with none other than Hercule Poirot: The Mystery of the Spanish Chest.

Enough of my ranting. By no means am I trying to dissuade whichever poor soul may read my review--I only want to prepare you for what lies behind the colorful cover of Harlequin Tea Set (and Other Stories).

Worth Reading
By Mary
This is an interesting collection of early Agatha Christie short stories, many of them appeared in various magazines. My favorites were The Lonely God, The Harlequin Tea Set and The Spanish Chest. I don't read many short stories, but I did enjoy this collection. I recommend it highly to just about any reader but expecially to the author's fans.

`Brewer brings to his task a full scholarly knowledge of the sources of Chaucerian biography... Of obvious value to students reading Chaucer and to all who read him for pleasure; more advanced scholars will also find in it much to provoke thought and advance understanding.' TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENTChaucer's tales, rich in comedy and pathos, have an immediate appeal; they draw freely and vividly from the romance and colour of the times in which he lived, and his world that of the second half of the 14th century is rich in cultural interest. It was a time of new exploration and new individualism, of peasant revolt and passionate religious dissent, and of a remarkable flowering of the arts. Chaucer lived at thevery centre of the action, and this book follows the stages of his career, illuminating with reference to the art and architecture of the time and through reference to his writings, the physical environment and intellectual climate in which he lived. Reissue: first published 1978.

From the Back Cover
Chaucer's English world-that of the second half of the 14th century-is rich in interest of every kind, and Chaucer was a uniquely perceptive recorder of it. The tensions between tradition and innovation led to serve, sometimes violent, clashes; age-old traditions were contested by the new individualism among the educated, passionate religious dissent in high and low, and revolt by peasants.

After You, by Natascha McElhone

Natascha McElhone was away filming in LA, with her two sons and pregnant with her third child when she received news that her beloved husband, Martin, had died suddenly of a heart attack. Unable to accept this devastating loss, she began writing letters to her husband, telling him how she felt, and how she and her children were adapting to life without him. The result is "After You", a triumphant testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It is a profoundly moving tribute to Natascha McElhone's three sons, whose appetite for life led the author through her darkest moments, and to their remarkable father.

A monument to love and courage
By doronjunger
Great art, or for that matter any other line of work, is created out of love, it would appear. So it is with this great little book of letters composed by the actress Natascha McElhone in her first year after the sudden and wholly unexpected death of 42 year-old husband, plastic surgeon Martin Kelly. Her grief's unadulterated rawness and her searing emotional honesty make reading this 110-page volume nothing short of a tour de force, and we can only speculate about the emotionally wrenching experience, however therapeutic, of writing it, and her brave decision ultimately to publish it. The very fact of this book's publication renders it a work of love directed not just to the husband and father who never these letters shall read, or their three sons who one day, no doubt, will do so filled with immense pride, but readers at large, privileged to vicariously accompany Natascha for the especially turbulent first twelve months of the emotional rollercoaster that constitutes life after Martin (lest my referring to them here by their first names seems overly familiar, any pretense to detachment or formality by the end of the ride seems the greater inappropriateness). Collectively we can consider ourselves fortunate that Natascha came down on this side of the proverbial fence she makes clear she was on at one point about publishing her letters.

I did actually know Martin, in my days training to be a plastic surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in London, as a smart, personable, subtly funny, driven and enviably talented colleague, and once met Natascha, briefly, at the hospital's 1997 Christmas party. I last spoke with Martin in 2008, when I inadvertently interrupted his out-patient clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital by calling him from Manhattan, where I then lived, for advice, which he graciously gave, on a friend's baby born in London with a facial deformity.

Martin and Natascha's motto was: "Work hard. Expect nothing. Celebrate." Her book expresses it perfectly. The mere fact and tragic circumstances of Martin's death notwithstanding, Natascha never, at least not in these pages, wallows in self-pity, and owing to her evidently irrepressible, whimsical and self-deprecating sense of humor I found myself more often smiling than her book's unfathomably sad subject matter brought tears to my eyes (though there was plenty of that). Far from the diva one might count on her to be, or the glamorous 'OK Magazine' lifestyle of otherwise untroubled privilege she might be expected to lead, Natascha comes across as vulnerable and unedited, all the more lovable for her unguardedly, bravely and generously shared insecurities and neuroses (in contrast, Martin - after all the object of this oeuvre - remains subtly less approachable to us, perhaps because through Natascha's lens he appears too close to perfect).

Natascha's description of the experience of grief from her children's perspective is impossible to remain unaffected by. One particularly moving passage, indicative I suppose of this cyberage of ours, is the incident she recounts, close to the anniversary of Martin's death, of Theo prompting her to vainly click on Martin's Skype username to see what would happen.

It comes as no surprise to read on Amazon's UK site and elsewhere that Natascha's book is helping bereaved readers in their grief. But this isn't a book just for widows and widowers - I would recommend it also to wives and husbands. A marriage therapist friend of mine once revealed to me that she mourns her husband daily to appreciate what she has. And husbands and fathers may gain a glimpse of how their loved ones might remember them in death, and thus be reminded of what matters in life. As profoundly and completely as Natascha experienced being loved by Martin, it is the palpable intensity of her love for him, and so articulately expressed acute grief over her loss, that surely make him the envy of every man alive. What better memorial?

Completely Real
By Zachary
Amazing book, amazing writer, amazing woman.

It's a completely raw & real book, and one can really feel her pain and heartache at the loss of her husband.

I've always been drawn to her as a woman watching the show Californication cause she seemed very real, and this book only confirms my assumption.

Highly recommended.

Poignant
By T. M. Truax
I bought this because I am a fan of Natascha Mcelhone and wanted to see how she was as a writer. What I found was a requiem of passage ~ the integration of grief and celebration over her husband's life and passing. It was honest, gritty, gut wrenching, and engaging.
