Honky, by Dalton Conley

As recalled in Honky, Dalton Conley’s childhood has all of the classic elements of growing up in America. But the fact that he was one of the few white boys in a mostly black and Puerto Rican neighborhood on Manhattan’s Lower East Side makes Dalton’s childhood unique.

At the age of three, he couldn’t understand why the infant daughter of the black separatists next door couldn’t be his sister, so he kidnapped her. By the time he was a teenager, he realized that not even a parent’s devotion could protect his best friend from a stray bullet. Years after the privilege of being white and middle class allowed Conley to leave the projects, his entertaining memoir allows us to see how race and class impact us all. Perfectly pitched and daringly original, Honky is that rare book that entertains even as it informs.

From Publishers Weekly
"I've studied whiteness the way I would a foreign language," declares Conley at the outset of his affecting, challenging memoir, laced with the retrospective wisdom of the sociologist (at New York University) he has become. As the child of bohemian, white parents, he grew up in an otherwise black and Hispanic housing project on New York's Lower East Side. At elementary school in the 1970s, he found himself placed in the "Chinese class," after his stint in the black classAwhere he was the only student not to receive corporal punishmentAleft him uncomfortable. Despite the family's lack of funds, they had cultural capital in the form of social connections, and were able to transfer young Dalton to a better school, where he began to feel some snobbery toward kids in his own neighborhood. Yet the friend who accepted Dalton most was a black youth from the neighborhood, Jerome, who was tragically disabled in a random act of violence that helped spur Conley's parents to leave the Lower East Side for subsidized housing for artists. Part of the memoir concerns the universality of povertyAbut a thoughtful examination of the privileges of race and class also emerges. Despite the book's title, the author cites only one major episode in which he was threatened and called "honky." Conley acknowledges that he doesn't know how to account for such successes as gaining admission into the selective Bronx High School of Science: race? parental protectiveness? his own aspirations? It is "the privilege of the middle and upper classes," he observes, to construct narratives of their own success "rather than having the media and society do it for us." (Oct.)

From Booklist
Conley, a sociology professor, brings to his analysis of race a unique experience in the social and racial maze of New York City. Conley grew up in a Manhattan housing project that was predominantly black and Hispanic. Yet his minority white status offered a perspective and insight into the analysis of American race and class conflict. Conley found himself placed with Asian students on a higher academic track in elementary school, later migrated downtown to the Village with rich white students in junior high school, and was finally placed in one of the more selective public high schools. Throughout his personal journey, he learns that class and race are interwoven in a complex social fabric making it somewhat difficult to determine which is the dominant factor. While Conley appears to maintain close personal friendships with minorities, his whiteness still provides him with opportunities not available to his black and Hispanic neighbors. Conley's perspective on his youth is likely reconstructive and colored by preferences. Yet his book offers a clarity and simplicity that is insightful and raises concerns of a more universal significance. Vernon Ford

From Kirkus Reviews
Conley (Sociology/New York Univ.) recounts his years of growing up poor in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s in the projects on the Lower East Side of New York, where as a white he was a minority amid Latinos, blacks, and Asians. His mother and father were a bohemian couple who abandoned their respectable origins and moved to the inner city. Young Conley went to school first on the Lower East Side first and later in Greenwich Village. The comparison between the poorer schools of the Lower East Side with those of better-off Greenwich Village allows the sociologist in Conley, mercifully gagged until that point, to come gushing through, in the process spilling the jargon of his profession over what had heretofore been a fine first-person narrative. Sociology gets him into trouble in other ways as well. Conley, for example, is inclined to appropriate slang words like "yo" from their present usage back into the late 1960s-when, arguably, it was being used only in some small sectors of the black community. Moreover, the word "honky" is a slightly disingenuous pejorative term, used (by Latinos mostly) more for its shock value than for anything else. More serious still is Conley's portrayal of blacks (and some Latinos, too) as hopeless victims-in contrast to the whites, who emerge triumphantly unscathed to tell the black and Latino stories with all their sympathies in all the right places. Not without its charm, Conley's account has the makings of a made-for-television movie. -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Analysis of Dalton Conley's Memoir
By Sammy
Dalton Conley effectively utilizes the tools of specific detail, imagery, and shifting perspective from a wide angle to close up; however, his usage of syntax is less effective. Conley consistently crafts unique passages by including one or two memorable and interesting details. For example, in Conley’s explanation of his father’s previous job scraping paint off Korean paintings, he describes the artwork vividly: “the soldiers had huge, round eyes; some were crying equally huge, round tears, which splashed onto their combat boots as they stared longingly at the viewer with homesickness” (33). The special detail Conley inserts into his narrative often is an image used to express an emotion or idea. He uses the simile: “the beads…looked like colored gnats or lice that had infested her scalp,” to convey that the colored beads looked terrible in his sister Alexandra’s hair (41).
Conley often switches from a wide angle to a close angle by writing a generic first sentence to introduce a scene, such as: “The second event happened to us and completely shattered my sense of our apartment as a fortress,” and then describing the scene or event in detail immediately afterward: “One weekend we went to visit my grandparents and left the kitchen window open…” (55). By employing the techniques of detail, imagery, and wide to close angle, Conley constructs well-crafted scenes of his memories throughout his memoir.
Conversely, Conley’s lack of consistency in using varied syntax weakens the effectiveness of his memoir. While he does include several short, punchy sentences, like, “I was right,” most of the time the sentences in his passages are all of a similar length:
“Initially my mother’s integrated carload didn’t encounter much resistance as they made their way through Virginia. Her main worry was how much weight she was putting on; the protesters were eating about eight meals a day. Most of the restaurant staff made them wait a while and didn’t smile or make eye contact, but they served them food just the same” (179 & 28).
This lack of varied syntax creates a monotonous rhythmic loop throughout most of the book. Overall, though, Conley successfully retains the reader’s interest by incorporating riveting detail, imagery, and shifts in perspective into his writing.

thought provoking and meaningful
By Michael
Like the author, I am white and spent part of my childhood living in low income housing in a predominantly black and hispanic neighborhood. I found this memoir so fascinating I could hardly put it down. Like the author, I have often pondered the complex reasons why I was able to escape to middle class success from the world of poverty, hopelessness, and violence that almost all my elementary school classmates presumably still live in. The book is a funny and honest memoir of childhood with just a light dose of analysis from the author's standpoint as an adult sociologist. Conley's description of the "cultural capital" and other resources that fueled his escape to an easier life really fits with my experience. This is a short book, and its brevity makes it a quick, entertaining read. I agree with some other reviewers that brevity also causes it to lack material that would be a great interest to many readers. What were the feelings and motivations of his parents? I also agree that Conley could have talked more about the complex, positive aspects of black family life that contrast with practices in white families, since his experiences should put him in a rare position to comment on this issue. I well remember the experience of being at a birthday party in the home of a black friend in second grade, sitting in a warm embrace on the lap of his grandmother, and realizing that the exuberant, loving, multigenerational family atmosphere there was a striking contrast to that in my family.

His "project" was a step up from where I lived
By A Customer
I also lived on the lower east side. Compared to the project where I lived, Masaryk Towers was a step up. Conley mentions the brown bricks of the projects but does not mention until later in the narrative the yellow bricks of Masaryk. The yellow bricks can be viewed as its difference from the projects in the area.
Conley makes it sound as if he's practically the only white person around. There were other whites in Masaryk and some whites lived in the housing projects as well. In addition, as Conley has a Jewish background, I'm surprised that he did not (unless I somehow missed it) mention the large Jewish community on the other side of the bridge right near his home.
I didn't like that Conley said that the names of the projects such as Riis and Wald have little meaning to the people who lived there. Many people live in places and have no idea whom they're named after.
I also didn't like that he insinuated that you could not get an education on the lower east side. I've had teachers who've inspired me to excel.
I've given this book 3 stars because it brought me back to the old neighborhood. The Pioneer supermarket, the luncheonette. These were part of my daily existence. Yet I think he was too hard on the Lower East Side. There is hope there.

In the following excerpt, author John Michael Greer explains that monsters have something valuable to teach us about ourselves and our world.

A thousand years ago, vampires and shapeshifters, spirits of the ancestors and spirits that were never human at all, intelligent beings with subtle bodies or none, were as much a matter of everyday life then as electricity is now.

But we know better nowadays, of course.

      Don't we?

This book is based on the uncomfortable knowledge that we don't know better-that at least some of these entities had, and still have, a reality that goes beyond the limits of human imagination and human psychology. For most people nowadays, such ideas would be terrifying if they weren't so preposterous. Plenty of modern Americans believe that UFOs are spacecraft from other worlds and psychics can bend silverware with their minds-but the existence of vampires and werewolves? To make things worse, this book explores such beings from the standpoint of an equally discredited system of thought: the traditional lore of Western ceremonial magic, which has been denounced and derided by right-thinking folk ever since the end of the Renaissance.

The word "monster" comes from the Latin monstrum, "that which is shown forth or revealed." The same root also appears in the English word "demonstrate," and several less common words (such as "remonstrance") that share the same sense of revealing, disclosing, or displaying. In the original sense of the word, a monster is a revelation, something shown forth.

This may seem worlds away from the usual modern meaning of the word "monster"-a strange, frightening and supposedly mythical creature-but here, as elsewhere in the realm of monsters, appearances deceive. Certainly, monsters are strange, at least to those raised in modern ways of approaching the world. As we'll see, too, monsters have a great deal to do with the realm of myth, although this latter word (like "monster" itself) has older and deeper meanings that evade our modern habits of thought. The association between monsters and terror, too, has practical relevance, even when the creatures we call "monsters" fear us more than we fear them.

The myth, the terror, and the strangeness all have their roots in the nature of the realm of monsters and the monstrous-a world of revelations, where the hidden and the unknown show furtive glimpses of themselves. If we pay attention to them, monsters do have something to reveal. They show us the reality of the impossible, or of those things we label impossible; they point out that the world we think we live in, and the world we actually inhabit, may not be the same place at all.

      A useful and insightful manual
      By G. Ridgeway
I have to begin by saying that I’m a bit bias, I love Greer’s work and I find him to be a wonderful and intelligent author that rights with honesty and obviously knows his subject matter from personal practice.
Monsters, is a good primer and look over of many of the common, creatures and things which go bump in the night that a occult practioner may have the "ill" or "good" fortune (depending on your view) of coming across. He does it in a way which as always is backed by a long list of research he has done on each of the monsters, which is matched with a great bibliography in the back.
The biggest thing I liked about this book was his approach. He does not go hyper paranoid on us and tell the reader to lock himself in a protective circle and banish three times a day. As well as he doesn’t go the other way, especially when it comes to Fae, and get all Fluffy Bunny on us, he presents the Historical writings say, first hand and others experiences, along with Occult Theories and ways Of identifying and dealing with each category of creature.
At the end he also provides some good suggestions on how to go about investigating incidents, and dealing with them. As well as some great techniques for "handling" situations.
The only thing I would like to add is I would really love to see him right a second book to this, covering intermediate and advanced topics. One can hope!
In the end, this is a good and informative read, where you will definitely leave with greater knowledge and practices to boot!

Absolutely the best book I've read on the subject of "Monsters"
      By bansheexcat
I've been interested in the subject of ghosts, fairies, vampires, and demons, etc. most of my life but I've found all other books on the topic to be very lacking in the theory behind the how's and why's of paranormal phenomena. I'm happy to finally find a book that gives plausible explanations for all sorts of supernatural beings.

Plausible at least from the perspective of the magically minded. Based on some of the other reviews, it seems like those that are...errr...uninitiated into the world beyond the material may not understand what Greer is discussing. However, if you have an open mind about the paranormal, I'd highly recommend this book. It goes far beyond merely describing the supernatural but actually attempts to explain it and gives good tips for how to protect yourself when the supposedly impossible happens.

One hell of a book and a must for Monster and Lore goers!
      By Daniel E. Cureton
[[VIDEOID:mo1NWXBOITCE8IX]]A must for all paranormal seekers and monster hunters. Lots of useful and practical information! Very handy guide for avoiding vampires, capturing Bigfoot, how to handle ghosts, what types of spirits there are, how to identify the fae and more. Was the first book on the topic I read and it really helped me to get a good feel of the areas of magical creatures and understand that part of the world better. I'm not saying I want to go ghost busters on them spirits but I know the difference now between hauntings, replays and a friendly occupation. I didn't do much of the natural/ritual magic sections but it had some great suggestions for protection remedies using natural magic and ritual magic. I'd recommend as a great piratical guide. Greer's writing style is awesome too. Funny and easy to read, he tells it as is.

At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough, and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, the teenaged Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.

Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead. But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh-eating zombies--and he's next on the menu.
As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chain saw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

      From Booklist
Kenyon, whose paranormal adult novels include 50 New York Times best-sellers, brings characters from her Dark Hunter series to teens with a new YA series featuring Nick Gautier, who appears here as a 14-year-old. After arriving at school and discovering that the football team members have turned into classmate-eating zombies, Nick sets out to stop the attacks, and in one unforgettable night, he learns that he has a pivotal role to play in an unseen world. The plot serves mostly as a device to introduce a dizzying array of characters, and the prose is laden with breathless ellipses and weighty pronouncements: “Anyone could feel the unearthly power that bled from the pores of this particular . . . being.” But Kenyon keeps the supernatural action careening along, and conversational banter lightens the tone. Kenyon has ratcheted down her tone from the adult series considerably: there are no steamy sex scenes or oaths stronger than “dang,” and there is little gore. Be prepared for lots of interest in the series from young Twilight fans. Grades 7-12. --Lynn Rutan

      Review

“The imagination of Kenyon is a wonder to behold and an amazing place to visit!” ―Romantic Times (Top Pick!)

“I have to admit that at the conclusion of the epilogue, I was already anticipating the next installment of the series...Mr. Graham was able to portray Nick beautifully and catch all of the eccentricities that abound in Infinity.” ―TeensReadToo.com

“While action abounds, listeners are never sure who the good guys are and whether they should be rooting for Nick. Holter Graham successfully paces the action to keep things moving and gives voice to a myriad of non-human characters, most often in life-threatening, over-the-top situations, easily switching from the New Orleans lilt of Bubba to the sweet cadences of Nekoda, Nick's would be love interest.” ―School Library Journal

      Review

      Praise for Sherrilyn Kenyon:

“[A] publishing phenomenon…[Sherrilyn Kenyon is] the reigning queen of the wildly successful paranormal scene.”

      PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“Kenyon’s writing is brisk, ironic and relentless imaginative. These are not your mother’s vampire novels.”

Nick surprised and highly entertained me...
      By Leontine's Book Realm
While I feel INFINITY loses no value as a YA novel if you haven't read the Dark-Hunter novels, I am already entangled in the adult life of Nick as I'm an avid reader of said DH series. This is why perhaps my review probably will make more sense to those who are also familiar to this series.

When I heard Nick's back-story would be told in a Young Adult series I promised myself I would buy INFINITY and my reading experience would decide whether or not I would continue buying and reading this series. I'm not an avid reader of the YA genre and the only reason I bought INFINITY was because it was connected to the Dark-Hunter series and the fact that Nick is still one of my favorite characters. This was my mind-set before I understood that the Chronicles of Nick would also reveal secrets regarding characters such as Cherise and especially Jaden and Jared. It makes reading this chronicle more of a necessity if I want to understand the whole Dark-Hunter arc of Jaden.

When I received my copy of INFINITY my everlasting curiosity spurred me on to crack the spine and I began to read immediately. I met Nick as we got to know him in the early days of the Dark-Hunter series, only a bit younger. His mother, Cherise, is a stripper trying to make a living for herself and her son in New Orleans. She teaches him to be honorable, but when your peers know what your mother does for a living, and you have a shirt on your back with fishes in neon colors, it is hard to get by in high school. It is why Nick cloaks himself in a devil may care attitude and give lip the moment someone makes a snarky comment. However, the fairer sex also has his undivided attention and his desire to charm them is present at the core. Then one night he is invited to join a few friends for some delinquent activities and he almost crosses a barrier. It is also the night he got beat up by his so called friends and the night he is saved by Kyrian Hunter. From this moment on there is no normal anymore in Nick's life and it all begins with the choice he made that night. The first day he goes back to school zombies create havoc on the grounds...

Nick's vivid personality, his cunning ways and his acerbic sarcasm pulled me in and I was surprised at how the story development kept my unwavering attention. Nick is a teenager who knows the rough side of life, he has a chip on his shoulder, an attitude to match, he loves his mother above all and has a penchant for trouble. If that isn't all, he enters the world of Dark-Hunters, Were-Hunters and all things that go bump in the night. Even though Nick is a teenager in this series all the things I like and love about his persona are already present in this Chronicle starter.

The story begins from an uncomplicated angle where the focus lies on Nick's school life and his relationship with his mother. It is largely due to Sherrilyn Kenyon's way of writing and letting me be a part of Nick's inner thoughts that instantly grabbed my attention. Nevertheless, as the story progressed, as more characters got introduced and the plot thickens it loses some of that easy going charm and bantering dialogues. There were a few characters who I already met in the Dark-Hunter series like; Kyrian Hunter and Acheron but also the younger cast of characters is not without its familiar faces like Tad and Tabitha Deveraux. It really feels like traveling back in time and meeting all these characters only that much younger but with the same attitudes. Still, there is one new character who really got to me and that is Nekoda Kennedy, a.k.a Kody. She has an interest in Nick that is not all teenage lovey-dovey and it involves so much more than meets the eye. Kenyon also ups the ante with a few plot twists that really infuses this series with major possibilities for Nick's character development. It gives a new perspective for the future of Nick and one that really excites me. It was an element in this book that caught me by surprise, next to the well-paced flow of the story it was something that held my undivided attention. The dialogues between Acheron and Nick are some of the best in this book but I must admit, I got lots of snappy bantering and humorous dialogues between a multitude of characters like only Sherrilyn Kenyon can deliver.

Next to meeting all the characters, getting all sorts of titillating information about Nick, the great interaction and humor, it is the zombie plotline that was probably the least thing that interested me. It is the origin of how teenager's got turned in to zombies that was just lost to me and I just couldn't surrender myself to that fact, which was probably a glitch of the adult me. What it did do is provide a turn of events which introduced Nick to a whole new world, he finds out all sorts of background info on some of the golden boys at his school and even some of his friends. Bubba and Mark are probably some of the most prominent supportive characters whose view on life and fighting zombies will make you grin.

If young adult readers find themselves introduced to Kenyon's characters and world in INFINITY then I think they will have a blast. Nothing is present to really make the reader think they're missing something, everything is present; from a main character who alternates his humor, sarcasm and charm with also his teenage fears, confusions and hopes for the future. A plot arc that fascinates and many characters who add their own personality flavor. A huge entertainment factor for me was to meet characters like Nick, Acheron, Tabitha and Kyrian again but I was caught off guard by how the story kept me in its grip. I couldn't stop reading and while I started at night, you can bet by the next evening I was finished, already contemplating how things would advance in future installments.

INFINITY was the kind of story where I expected nothing but turned out to be a surprising and highly entertaining read. Some YA elements might not catch on with me but I feel that Sherrilyn Kenyon set-up a dynamic and intriguing angle to one of the most beloved characters in the Dark-Hunter series. I'm confident Nick will find its way to many readers, both in the YA genre as for the fans of the DH series.

      Blows Twilight Away
      By T. A. Anderson
As a die-hard DH fan, I had SERIOUS trepidation about this book. I have to say the last few books that followed after Acheron up to now were painful reads. Painful and frustrating. So, when Kenyon decided to jump on the Twilight bandwagon with teen paranormal fiction/romance, I'd pretty much thrown in the towel. I honestly didn't think we could get a good story without hot Dark Hunters traversing the streets of Anytown, USA and I was furious with Kenyon for MONTHS over what I was sure was going to be a literary debacle.

Okay, I was wrong and I take it all back.

Firstly, for those of you moaning about "eww, it's YA", read the dang cover! Sherri has said for MONTHS this was teen fiction, so man up and deal with it. Blame yourself for not keeping up with the DH Universe.

Secondly, the book was flipping awesome. It was PURE Sherri from cover to cover. It has everyone in the DH Universe we all know and love plus some really new and interesting characters, too. THIS is what teen fiction should be, a nonstop roller-coaster ride with unexpected curves, dips and twists that keeps you turning pages. Though it's toned down for the teen audience, don't think that Sherri compromised on wit, humor, or action. It's all there. It's the old Sherri we know from before Acheron. (Not sure what happened to the books after that, but I'll forgive her anything because Infinity flippin' rocks!)

Thirdly, the CD set is narrated by Holter Graham. HOW MUCH BETTER CAN IT GET? I haven't been this happy over a DH book SINCE Acheron. Finally, some teen fiction that has soul, character development, humor. It doesn't take itself seriously like Twilight (die already!) or Vampire Academy. Infinity blows them ALL out of the water and I feel the DH fever again.

You proved me wrong, Sherri. I'm sorry I lost faith in you, but you came through, babe. You nailed it with Infinity!

No Potato No Tomato: Life In The Time Of Jesus, by Sarit Gani

A tiny 2,000 years old stone tells a story about the way of life in the time of Jesus in the Holy Land. How people dressed; how they shopped; what a kitchen looked like and which dishes were cooked; what had been their common occupations? The stone, which had dropped off a Roman mosaic, found her way to New York in the pocket of a Marine soldier visiting Israel. Her memory is sharp and she can answer many questions a contemporary child might ask. The story is sprinkled with references from the scriptures and is accompanied by ravishing illustrations by the artist Elias Akleah, who grew up and resides in Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus in the Galilee.

A brilliant piece of mosaic from the holy land.
      By Menachem Lerer
This book came as a refreshing surprise while we were shopping for a special gift for our nephew who is 9 years old. We were trying to find the proper book to enhance the experience of visiting the Holy Land. The book brings to life important facts such as dwellings, clothes and food that are usually hidden in the holy scriptures, in a truly original style.
The book is written in a way that promotes the child to ask questions, to explore the historical sites and to be more involved with the ancient way of life.

Excellent intro - but look for a used copy
      By Just a Guy
Almost every other text I have seen on dynamic programming, particularly stochastic dynamic programming, and related subjects, has been way too theoretical to be of much use to me. While I'm mathematically literate, my main interest is in algorithms and applied probability (big on the "applied" part).

At least to me, this book is just about perfect. The emphasis is on dynamic programming applied to discrete optimization problems, including all the usual goodies (shortest paths, knapsack, optimal stopping, and more), although some continuous models are also included (eg. exponential, Poisson). The exposition is driven by worked examples, rather than by theorem and proof. The style is precise, but straightforward and practical - very easy to follow. How it covers so much so well in only 200 pages is remarkable.

It is however, way overpriced, so look for a good used copy.

90 per cent of books in a typical bookstore are not worth the paper they are written on. This is NOT one of those books. The concepts presented in this book are profound. It is the best book I own.

A dated manifesto whose time has passed
      By Michael S. McGill
This book is vast in its ambitions, uneven in its analysis, and badly dated in its defense of modern architecture. Giedion's basic premise is that the Industrial Revolution caused a separation to occur between thinking and feeling, this separation was exemplified by what he considers derivative architecture during the 19th century, and that it is up to the modern movement to reunite these two spheres by combining emotions with a scientific approach to architecture, and by adding the dimension of time to its three dimensional depiction of space. His historical analysis is quite erudite, but his treatment of the major architects who founded the modern movement, particularly Gropius and Le Corbusier, verges on hagiography. For instance he considers Gropius' PanAm building in New York, and Le Corbusier's Carpenter Center at Harvard to be great works of architecture, when contemporary critics view these as among their worst. The only American architect given comparable attention is Frank Lloyd Wright. The book flounders at the end in its speculation about the future, praising Le Corbusier's advocacy of separating people from cars by building elevated highways, and housing people in slablike high rise towers. Considering that Pruitt-Igoe was already, at the time of his final revision to his book, failing in St. Louis as an approach to house poor families (it was later blown to smithereens as a total disaster), this advocacy of housing people in high rises rings hollow indeed. He also advocates separating functions in a city, at a time again during his final revision, when Jane Jacobs "Death and Life of Great American Cities" was revolutionizing city planning by advocating just the opposite. It is worth reading because it makes you think, but it is badly dated.

      A history of linear progression
      By A Customer
This book is based on lectures Giedion gave at Harvard 1938-39. It is considered a modernist manifesto and after WW II, and well into the 1960s, it was often used in the training of architects all over the western world. European readers found the book interesting primarily because of it's section on the American history of architecture. The subtitle - The growth of a new tradition - refers to Giedion's conviction that the modern movement was the logical outcome of what he saw as a linear historical development. To make his case he gives his version of the history of architecture, and a big portion deals with the industrial era and how new technologies changed architecture and society as a whole. Giedion's all-inclusive way of reasoning was inspired by his teacher Heinrich Wölfflin. He also admired Wölfflin's mentor Jakob Burchardt. Giedion's mission is clear and he states that laissez faire mentality hinders development and that with common goals and values the world would be able to make changes for the better on a grand scale. Today the book in my view is primarily interesting as a time document and it gives insight into the modernist world of universal ideals.

Walt Disney's animation strove to duplicate reality, but Tex Avery's steered clear of the limitations of lifelike action, and today's cartoons owe far more to Avery's over-the-top style than to Disney's staidness. Since his 1980 death, Avery has been getting his belated critical due, culminating in this lavish art book. Avery was instrumental in developing Bugs Bunny and the other Warner Brothers cartoon stars, but this retrospective focuses on his artistic pinnacle at MGM in the 1940s and 1950s. There, his vivid comic imagination flowered in maniacally paced masterpieces full of wild gags and zany characters. Welcomely light on text--though Canemaker's commentary is informed and insightful--the volume is loaded with well-reproduced animation cels, storyboards, and other artwork. So classy a tribute to an anarchic, rowdy artist like Avery may seem somehow inappropriate, but with producers of crude made-for-TV-cartoons like Hanna-Barbera getting coffee-table treatment these days, heck, Avery deserves a banquet-table tome.
