This is a collection of cynical but uniformly unbiased "antipolitical essays" portraying the reality of Communist and post-Communist Yugoslavia. Ugresic's (Have a Nice Day, LJ 3/1/95) intent is not to clarify the politics behind the fall of Yugoslavia but to question the definition of "Yugoslav identity" and critique its shattered culture. She firmly argues that, despite the fall of the Communist regime, the lives of former Yugoslavs in their new "independent homelands" haven't really changedAthey are still based on lies, intolerance, sexism, and political brainwashing. These essays, many of which have previously appeared in European newspapers and periodicals, will enrage and sadden you and then fill you with disgust toward narrow-minded nationalism. Ugresic defends her viewpoint skillfully and confidently, refusing to label herself with a "post-Yugoslav" nationality. About the Author
Dubravka Ugresic is the author of many books, including four that have been translated into English: In the Jaws of Life and Other Stories (1993), Fording the Stream of Consciousness (1993), Have a Nice Day (1994), and The Museum of Unconditional Surrender (1998). She was awarded the prestigious Charles Veillon Prize in 1996 for The Culture of Lies. Since 1993 she has lived in exile in Amsterdam and frequently lectures in the United States.

Sadly accurate

Dubravka Ugresic is perhaps less well-known in the English-speaking world than the other Croatian "dissident" writer Slavenka Drakulic, which is unfortunate. Both Ugresic's essays and especially fiction are far superior to that of Drakulic. "Culture of Lies" includes the author's observations of Croatian society and politics of the last ten years, both of which have been none too kind to her (indeed, while achieving great acclaim in other European countries, she was branded a "traitor" and worse by Croatian politicians and the pro-regime press for her uncompromising criticism of Croatian nationalism, etc.). In this book, Ugresic shows the many ways in which nationalism imbued all levels of society in Croatia, making people increasingly hostile to different views and people who were/are "different." Her particular area of interest is the way this was reflected in the behavior of intellectuals, who-at least one would like to think-are not supposed to be as susceptible to the appeal of God-and-country patriotism and nationalistic kitsch. Her description of an incident in a Zagreb tram, in which a young man accosts and beats an old destitute drunken man, is particularly vivid and sadly indicative. In fact, this whole section of the book, called "Souvenirs from Paradise" is an excellent collection of impressions and observations of the underside of Croatian life. Despite the recent sweeping political changes in Croatia, many of the negative aspects of society in this country as described by Ugresic are still here, and they will haunt this country for some time to come.

Ironic, melancholic, bitter humanism

Although it has taken the English translation of this collection of essays a few years to come into print (it was first published in Dutch),this is a highly relevant, illuminating, and moving book. Most of the essays were written between '92 and '94, with more recent postscripts. With rare clarity and complexity of thought, gift of articulation, emotional courage and absence of pretence or squeamishness, Ugresic has carried out a highly accessible investigation into the Yugoslav war, the demise of communist Europe, the East-West polarity, the ambiguities of exile. With references to other East European writers and thinkers (Milan Kundera, Miroslav Krleja, Danilo Kis, Josiph Brodsky), she explores the tyranny of the new constructs of national identity in the Balkan states, the enforced collective amnesia of the former Yugoslavs, the many traumas of their history, as well as the common psycho-cultural lanscape of the 'Eastern block'. There are many deeply moving episodes and revealing insights here, delivered in the familiar 'Central European' style of ironic, melancholic, bitter humanism. Vaguely reminiscent of Milan Kundera, only better because of the lack of smugness and the final doubting humility of someone who has felt intense pain and articulated the nature of this pain.

Excellent writing, insightful and thought provoking

This well-written book gives keen insight to events surrounding the dissolution of Yugoslavia while providing a view into the collective mind of former Yugoslavians. This book also makes one wonder about how nationalism is used, for better or worse, in other countries as a political vehicle to motivate its people to support specific ideals. While I agree with Ugresic's criticism of nationalism and the role it plays in post-Yugoslavian times, I also wonder if it is just a collective defense-mechanism, a means for survival when collective identity is being shattered. It is a fascinating read, well-written, and illuminating on many different levels.

"A powerful layer of meaning inflected by the Civil War"

If you decide to buy THE CIVIL WAR AND AMERICAN ART as a gift for some lucky person, be prepared to receive effusive thanks for a thoughtful and beautiful gift. If you are thinking of it as a gift to yourself, that too will bring long-lasting rewards. The book is of such quality it should appeal beyond the camps of Civil War buffs and lovers of American Art.

What impresses most is how successfully all elements of the book converge.

First and foremost is the text. Eleanor Jones Harvey's thesis is a simple one: "The Civil War had a profound and lasting impact on American Art, as it did on American culture. Both genre painting and landscape painting were fundamentally altered by the war and its aftermath." As well, she demonstrates how photography--the third of her areas of interest--was newly empowered as an art form.

Harvey's writing occupies pages 1 through 241 of this large book. Each generous page measures 12 1/2 by 9 15/16 inches, allowing double-column formatting of the text. The prose is wonderfully clear, a pleasure to dip into, blessedly free of academic jargon and devoid of esoteric pleading. Harvey conveys a mountain of essential facts and observations without halting the forward momentum of her narrative and argument. This is no mean feat. She uncovers layers of meaning within 77 paintings and photographs of the era. Among the works closely analyzed are thirteen Civil War related paintings by Winslow Homer, an artist who will grow larger in your estimation thanks to the findings of Harvey's eye and mind.

Additional documentation includes a section of Notes (32 pages); a Bibliography of over 300 sources and references (20 pages); a Catalog listing the 77 works featured in the Exhibition currently on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, through April, 2013 (the show will travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, May-September, 2013); and a list of the 123 Figure Illustrations found throughout this well designed book. A helpful Index rounds out the volume. Overall the illustrations of works of art are of fine quality, yet, unavoidably, they are imperfect substitutes for the originals. The reproductions of the paintings cannot convey the overwhelming beauty of the luminous landscapes of Frederick Church, Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Gifford. The genre paintings, even when reproduced in full-page spreads, cannot reveal all the small but important details the artist included. Missing too is the emotional pull of actual vintage albumin prints on the walls of the exhibition. All of which is to say something obvious: If you can, please try to get yourself to one of the two museum venues -- there to enjoy a complete experience.

The chapter titled "The Human Face of War" tells it all.

This beautiful book is for artists, Civil War buffs and historians. The photography is outstanding. The paintings by Homer, Church, Gifford, Chapman, I could go on and on, bring a much deeper meaning than photos could ever do. This book is filled with human emotion and been compiled brilliantly by Eleanor Jones Harvey. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Fantastic and Refreshing

As a Civil War aficionado, one tends to find much of the same information in many books. The Civil War and American Art deals with many popular Civil War topics but does so from so refreshing an angle that even the most devoted Civil War reader will learn something new. Art is a reflection of society and this book reflects an honesty from a society so deeply ingrained in modern imagination that many people ignore what the society, itself created.

Harvey seamlessly melds the art into the context of the day using excerpts from literature and first person accounts. The book does not only cover the war years but also includes the years leading to war as well as the decade after to place Civil War era art into its proper context.

Harvey discusses well-known symbolism in pre-Civil War and Civil War literature and art such as the use of comets and meteors at the start of the war. Shortly before the war, a meteor was seen by many from New York to Delaware. Many took it as an omen that John Brown, the radical abolitionist known as the “Meteor of War’s” prediction was coming true. On the gallows for his organization of a slave uprising, he wrote a note stating, “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” It was striking symbolism used by artists and writers at the time who felt that their lives were about to change.

Not excluding photography, Harvey introduces the rather unprecedented work of famous wartime photographers such as Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, Timothy O’Sullivan and George S. Cook giving an in-depth look into the medium of photography as it was. In a time when almost everyone has a camera in their pocket, it is difficult to imagine just how shocking the images of war were to the people of the 1860s. From only ever seeing paintings and etchings of gallant soldiers fighting artistic battles to the sudden shift of seeing lifeless, mangled bodies piled like meat really brought the true cost of war home to people.

This book is a very interesting read with stunning photographs. It gives a very in-depth look into the art and literature of the time, allowing the reader a better-rounded view on the culture of the people that created it.

Perfect guide for someone who wants to continue their work out routine or simply wants to start it. For athletes, this book is a great motivator; it's exactly what they need to perfect their bodies and keep fighting to bettetr their skills in training for a certain sport. For the ordinary bum like me, it's also a great motivator to get off the couch, turn off the computer and start moving the body your mother gave you.

Yes, I agree that it is merely a book with all of the exercises that you might find online. But how much time will it take you to gather and recompile all from online sources? Besides, the online sources do not provide a good categorization or grouping as this book does. I love the book due to its simplicity and organization.

what most schroomers are interest in

As an avid schroomer and an educator in collecting and identifying mushrooms most folks I know always ask the question "is it edible?". This book helps to answer that question. The author also put enough caution into his book that a reader would find out that one can never be too careful when consuming wild mushrooms. The pictures and descriptions are excellant. The author also goes into the relationship between certain trees and the mushroom itself. This helps the new schroomer know where to search for a certain species. A great help on this subject!!!!!!

Wonderful guide!

This is my third mushroom guide, and so far is my favorite, followed closely by "Audubon's Field Guide to Mushrooms". The photos in Michael Kuo's book are wonderful, the descriptions are clear, and I especially like that it has a section especially for "beginners" (of which I am one) that describes a few edibles that aren't easily confused with anything else. This section has helped me to locate safe edibles in my area. I'm loving this book and carry it with me in my vehicle. You just never know when or where you might spot an interesting fungi! I highly recommend this book!

Great Book!

This is a beautiful book that is a wonderful addition to my collection of mushroom books. The large, full color photos are especially appreciated.

If you want to expand your knowledge of mushrooms and enjoy reading well written and sometimes entertaining mushroom lore in easy-to-understand plain English, you will love this book.

All the measurements are metric. Since my brain refuses to make the conversion, I read the descriptions with a ruler that features inches and centimeters in hand.

The section on poisonous mushrooms is especially good, and the Focus Points are great. I keep returning to this book again and again after consulting other mushroom guides, and it often answers questions about specific mushrooms that the other books leave unanswered.

I also use Michael Kuo's excellent online identification keys for mushrooms not covered in this book.

Highly recommended.
