Moravec, a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, envisions a not-too-distant future in which robots of superhuman intelligence have picked up the evolutionary baton from their human creators and headed out into space to colonize the universe.

The difference lies in Moravec's practical-minded mapping of the technological, economic, and social steps that could lead to that vision. Given the ever-increasing speed and memory size available to computer scientists, Moravec, who founded Carnegie Mellon's major robotics program, predicts that artificial intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 2050. He argues further that it is only a matter of time before we have computer simulations that will substitute for human functionality. (Yes, robots will take over the work force, but ultimately humans will benefit from a fully automated economy.) Moravec considers the various arguments, philosophical and otherwise, that have been made regarding whether computers can "think" and devotes a fair amount of coverage to questions Turing raised 50 years ago. His comparison of libraries to knowledge bases is simplistic?apparently, Moravec doesn't see any intellectual component to cataloging?but overall his interpretations are imaginative and his arguments interesting if not always convincing. Automation and quality of life

The best book on the future of robotics and automation! However, Hans believes robots are our wonderful mind children and should grow into powerful machines that evolve quickly past us. He is then horrified that some humans may transform themselves into machines and become very dangerous. Why won't his mind children be just as dangerous or more dangerous? At least a mind-transferred human might seek pleasure and fun. While Hans' logical AI robots make their galactic invasion plans!

Why not engineer automation to its pleasure giving limits? Instead of giving robots a high quality of life, design automation to increase EVERYONE quality of life and wealth on Earth???

Fantastic and imaginary!
This has a stodgy slow start covering the early years of robotics. But after this the book goes off with a bang. The self professed psychics fundamentalist expands a potential robotic future from basic principles. A thoroughly enlightening read.

Dennis is a stunt man, er... boy... er, young adult. Being of slight build, although muscular, he didn’t get into sports when in middle and high school. No, he was far too deeply involved in the motion picture business by then. It all began when he was less than a year old and snowballed from there.

After so many years of earning money to pay his union dues and his agent and his medical insurance company... let’s see... anything else? Oh, yeah, life insurance. Not much left after all that. OH! And taxes, of course. Anyway what little he yielded from work went into savings to be held for use toward his college education.

He had his life pretty much planned out and he was on his way, eventually entering the college of his choice at the State university. His academics were excellent and he was going for an advanced degree after having earned two bachelors degrees at the ripe old age of twenty. Life though, had other plans for him. Plans which he never saw coming and which proved to be far more invasive to his rather simplified existence as a stunt person; not that being a stunt person is simple but he hadn’t allowed for... let’s just say... strange circumstances... which might or might not pop up here and there as he flowed through what he thought was his life. It became ever more strange when he met someone at lunch in the studio commissary.

The old Chinese curse, “may you live in interesting times” certainly went out of it’s way to introduce itself to him.

Fun gender-bending urban fantasy

This is a fun gender-bending urban fantasy, narrated by a stunt-man/actor, who is playing the role of a woman who grows fairy wings and learns to fly. And all along as the movie-set gets rolling, Dennis(e) learns to fly for the TV-movie with space-age wings. The endearing first-person narration was a blast, especially as Dennis(e) copes with evil studio executives, dangerous stunts, and a mysterious stranger who seemingly appears and disappears at will.

There are some over-explained technical details concerning flying that were interesting while I was reading it, but those details - in retrospect - were not really necessary. After a tantalizing setup, I'd have been just as interested in reading more about the story-within-the-story. That said, its a fun book and more than worth a read for an urban fantasy fan.

A long..big; I enjoy long books..that take the time to developed both story and it's characters. A bit tedious with the Hollywood
and engineering but this all contributes to a more substantial story..Did enjoy the further
developments which happened around the 60% point..ok..I am hooked great story and eager for the sequel

A good read clear through.

Apparently, either the author has an extensive background in the acting profession or is kind of O.C.D. about details. Being not of the motion picture industry I found, at first the details interesting, however was unsure of where the author was going with the story. I held on though and at about 62% into the book it finally began to unfold and I was hooked to continue reading. I read through to an excellent finish that was both satisfying and yet intriguing enough to peak my interest in reading the next in this series. If you're a nut for details and background information, then this book is definitely for you!
