Wonderful source for keeping up-to-date with latest trends of communication

Well, what can I say, I simply love the book. It has reminded me that when it comes to communication, we are all human beings not machines. We have feelings and different situations at every moment of our lives; we need to remember all this when deciding to play the communication game.

To some, the elements of communication mentioned in the book are taken for granted basics but, for some others, it is a guideline to learn how to communicate better. Simply put, not every one is born with the give of "gap-ping". Let it be face-to-face conversations, emails, letters, blogs, IM and/or all other ways of communications, we must have some guidelines.

This text provides the reader with the guidance of learning basic to professional techniques of communication; not only do we learn how to use clarity, conciseness, etiquette when writing to others, but also teach us to learn to recognize the audience which, in a era of globalization, is of most importance. The authors of the books point out our cultural diversities and remind us to treat each other with respect, patience and understanding.

I could say much more of the text, but as you probably figured out, I am a student and have only read up to Chapter 7. So much to read, so much to learn! I am so thrilled to have come across this book and be able to keep up with the trends of communication and the reminder, that unfortunately, we all need once in a while when it comes to communicate with each other. This book not only applies to professional life but every day life as well. I could go on and on with the thoughts this book has provoked in me but, maybe, I will get back with more to say once I finish reading the book. Do not miss the chance to read it!

How Did This Book Make It To The 8th Edition?

If you are a college professor or instructor, please do not use this book. A far more accessible and technically correct book for your students would be Dale Carnegie's The Leader In You (How To Win Friends and Influence People). While Carnegie's book does not have "reading exercises" like a traditional textbook might, your students will get far more out of reading his book than Bovee's.

I am a senior in college and my Communication for Business Professionals course is using this textbook as the primary learning resource. I feel this book was a waste of my money due to the number of content faults in the 8th Edition. I have not reviewed nor read previous editions.

A major gripe I have with this book is incorrect statements, a polite way of saying the author did not fact-check and proof-read their work. Again, this book is in its 8th Edition and the current layout of this book is discouraging considering the book is supposed to be about communication. I accumulated a list of content faults regarding this book, and will try to share some of them with you to help dissaude you from wasting your money on this book:

(1) Indirectly referring to the United States as a high-context culture, stating that high-context cultures prefer very strict schedules. A few pages earlier, the book contradicts this statement by directly detailing how the United States is a low-context culture.

(2) The book constantly mixes up its point-of-view on what the best way to approach others is. Earlier on, it suggests its important to consider your own feelings first. A few chapters later, it scalds you for putting yourself before others and on several occasions reminds you that "earlier" in the text it referred to how important talking in terms of others desires is. What is the better way? Well, having read Dale Carnegie's book on leadership, I can tell you the best approach is always to "bait the hook to suit the fish" as Carnegie would say. In other words, address your audiences needs before you take into account your own feelings.

Overall, the book tries to be all-encompassing and fails. To cover communication in detail, you cannot be general and all-encompassing. You have to be specific and follow a model for communication.

This book also does not appropriately address large issues in communication, such as PERCEPTION. In business, perception is everything and can lead to you trying to negotiate too hard and costing your company dollars. There is a famous anecdote of Japanese and American businessman sitting across the table from one another negotiating a business deal. After the American finishes discussing his business proposal, he is unnerved by the silence of the Japanese negotiators to the point where he believes something is wrong. The end result, and conclusion of this anecdote, is the American perceived the need to devoid the silence by talking more. In the process, the American lowered his demands and the Japanese negotiators then agreed once the American backed himself into a corner.

The only complete book of business communication

I did enjoy every page of this book, although I haven't read all of them. It's more an encyclopedia, which you may use in your day-to-day business, than something you will read straight through over the weekend. Very valuable and up-to-date were the chapters about intercultural and e-mail communication. Strong recommendation.

watching the detectives

By now it's fairly common knowledge that the side of Freud's work concerned with actual practice is, to understate the case, problematic. He is a brilliant thinker, and a beautiful writer, but his need to find the "truth" of his patients is quixotic at best. However, this very quality makes the Dora case one of the first great modern novels. What is revealed is not so much Dora's truth, as the unravelling of the position of interpretive authority - in this case, the psychoanalyst. Freud imagines himself absent from his analysis, but we see him intrude more and more into the frame as he investigates the secrets of Dora's mind. In this way, the story reads like detective fiction, making evidence less anchored in a tangible structure as it becomes more intent and focused. It's a great, juicy read. Just don't take it to seriously.

Freud was revolutionary for his time but...

Freud was definitely a revolutionary in the field of psychology during a period where water therapy and shock treatments were routinely administered and talking to patients to resolve problems was thought to be absurd. However, one cannot ignore Freud's unmistakable misogyny.

I find it disturbing that Freud's conclusion about Dora and women in general was that women like to be sexually assaulted by men. He also asserts that Dora really wanted the sexual assault and even further that she should have submitted to it.

Freud also seems to assert some kind of empiricism of his method but it is almost as though he never realizes that the entire scenario that he has "derived" are wholly constructed and based on entirely questionable interpolations.

Given the history of Dora - her father was having an affair with a Frau K, the older [than Dora] husband Herr K comes on to her and sexually assaults her on several occasions, her father becomes distant to her and uses her as a pawn in his sexual exploits with Frau K, Frau K betrays her trust, her father believes Herr K when he denies that Dora was sexually assaulted by him, her mother does not really do anything to help her, she is Jewish and living in Germany during an obviously bad period, and she was subjected to water therapy and shock therapy prior to meeting with Freud. If this was not all bad enough, she was sent to Freud by her father who also added insult to injury by telling her that she wanted to kiss him too and asserted that all of the above things were her fault.

Masterful

Whatever can be said about Freud's conclusions, his psychoanalytical method was one of the great turning points from the 19th century to the 20th. Although many of his conclusions may not be pertinent universally as he may have thought, especially the family romance--Oedipus complex, the way he tackles the neuroses of late 19th century Vienna is indeed masterful.
What matters here is the method, which has matured since the early cases in the Studies on Hysteria, which this makes a good companion for. The Dora case is unique in that Freud does not come to any sort of conclusion, the analysis is ended abruptly by the patient (or rather the patient's father). Whereas in Studies, the method is incomplete, here, the method is simply not carried to its conclusions. Both reveal much of how Freud's thought developed.
Freud says explicitly in the preface that the reader should be familiar with dream interpretation, and that he will not repeat what he had said in his Interpretation of Dreams. It should still be possible to appreciate the genius behind the work, even if some of the conclusions about the dreams may perhaps seem like jumps.

Another great read. Curran delivers once more

I've been following Curran on and off for the last 5 or 6 years. It's true, there was a time where I wasn't reading any of his work because it all seemed the same: over-descriptive writing, gore in place of a a decent storyline, repeated plots and recycled violence. However, in more recent months, I've found myself returning to his works, and it seems that time off has been totally worth it. Curran has stepped up his game, writing quicker, more action-packed novellas in place of the plodding, sometimes boring novels of previous years. Now, in Grimweave, Curran once again returns to Vietnam, only, unlike Headhunter, this time, the creature he creates is far more scary and gruesome:

"The Creature was waiting for him. It was sitting there, clinging to the lip of the chasm like some great and impossible insect about the size of a pickup...or maybe two of them. It was some sort of thing Spiers had seen through the scope, only much, much larger. Its body was wide and low, cream-colored, roughly figure eight-shaped, like two plated discs joined together, each of which seemed to be formed of interlocking segments. Not smooth in the least, but chitinous and ridged, convoluted with bony furrows and narrow furrows like ribs, lots of knobs and hollows set between. And spines. A series of them rose from its dorsal plates and each of them looked long enough to skewer a man. Obscenely skeletal, the creature had at least ten legs, maybe as many as a dozen, each big around as a fence post and jointed like those of a crab. A sheer membrane of flesh webbed them together at the upper extremities. At each leg was a bulging pod that oozed nets of spreading, living webs. It looked like a living exoskeleton."

If there is any doubt that Curran is one of the most descriptive, highly visual authors in the field, that quote, directly from the book, should shut down any naysayers. That he has such a rich imagination doesn't surprise me, but the fact that he can translate that into words and sentences so rich in detail and vivid illustration is a skill that all authors want, but few can immolate. Even now, as I work on my own short stories and formulate ideas for others, it's Curran's strong talent that has been a huge inspiration for me. In a way, it's unfortunate that Curran still sneaks under the radar in literary circles, however, the fact that he seems to be grossly underrated isn't necessarily a bad thing. I can only imagine how much his work would suffer should he, somehow, sign a massive contract with Scribner or Harper.

Grimweave may not be quite as strong as Hive or Hive 2 (both of which really introduced me to the Cthulhu mythos and Lovecraft as a whole), but don't let that keep you from giving it a shot. It's actually a lot of fun and a quick, entertaining read.

The dialogue is horrible and it’s like the author watched Full Metal Jacket ...

Wow, I powered through this book because of all the positive reviews and figured the end would have a big payoff. Boy was that the wrong call! Where to begin?

All of the characters in the book are one-dimensional and I found myself rooting against them. The action described in the book is mediocre. The dialogue is horrible and it’s like the author watched Full Metal Jacket and Predator on side by side TVs, then tried to use the foul-mouthed rants to fill pages in between the story of those two movies merging together. And though the derogatory homophobic misogynist language is rampant, the author refrains from using ugly racial slurs which were common at the time (this is a period piece set during the Vietnam conflict). Go all in or stay out!

And then comes the adjectives. How many ways can we describe the heat and humidity of the jungle? Read every other page and find out…we get it…it’s hot and humid.

I’m pretty sure the author never re-read his work after his first draft because of the inconsistencies on every page. At some points the jungle is so still and silent, only to have the next paragraph talk about the incessant chirping of the bats overhead…huh? The group is well-disciplined veterans only a page later to be sniveling in fear, then back to “the mission comes first” trained killers they are…WTF? And my favorite, a certain character is killed in front of everyone, and two pages later the main character asks about him coming back from looking around with the others (Chapter 23). It’s called proof-reading.

And just to get nit-picky, does the author seriously not have any military friends that could at least give the story a once over? The ranks are wrong…Any Lance Corporal that ever called Master Gunnery Sergeant, “Gunny,” would wake up with a broken jaw knowing never to demote him again. “Gunny” is for a Gunnery Sergeant and “Master Guns” can be the affectionate term for a Master Gunnery Sergeant, which is a full two ranks higher than a Gunny. You also wouldn’t ever refer to the man as “NCO Carmody”…it’s Master Gunnery Sergeant Carmody (and he’s an SNCO for Staff Non-Commissioned Officer). Those are just irritating points. One infuriating thing is that no officer would act the way the Major acted, much less consider killing one of his men because it’s slowing the mission down (the worst thing any officer deals with is the loss of anyone in their command).

Without giving away any spoilers, the explanation at the end of the book was unoriginal and made little sense with the way events unfolded.

Overall, this is a horrible read and you’re better off watching atrocious movies on SyFy rather than devoting any time to this.

Grimweave sticks with you!

Are you ready to be terrified again? If you're a fan of Tim Curran's work like I am, then this book will not disappoint. It's full of the classic chilling drama that we have all come to expect from his work. The characters are all very cool, especially Spiers. Man goes through the stuff, and you just aren't sure how he will come out, or even if he will at all. I found the creatures to be particularly unnerving, mainly due to a certain fear that I have...lol. This book offered me everything I fully expected it to. I recommend this, not only to fan's of Tim Curran, but to fans of sci-fi/horror in the first place. You will not be sorry that you picked this up.

content good, but obviously skimped on the printing

All of the content that I was looking for in this book is there - however, obviously the printing was done "on the cheap." Several pages have smears of dirt on them, and I found what looks to be a smashed bug in between a couple of pages. There are a few places where the pages are "wrinkled" (looks like paper does when it gets jammed in a copier). Some of the text is faded or illegible in places where this happened. All of the content that I was looking for in this book is there - but the printing and construction of this book was substandard, especially for over $100.

This book is about one musical work, the popular Quartet for the End of Time by the great French composer Olivier Messiaen. Like virtually all of his works, the Quartet combines the striking technical achievement of Messiaen's rich and attractive musical style with a deeply felt theological inspiration. Anthony Pople's book provides an introduction to Messiaen's style through an examination of this great work, showing how it came to be composed while Messiaen was a prisoner-of-war and premiered under extraordinary conditions in Stalag VIIIA in 1941. He gives an in-depth assessment of each of its eight movements.

An exceptional overview of one of Messiaen's most characteristic works

Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps is, in many ways, a textbook example of all of the techniques he had consolidated up until 1941 (and is still a characteristic "textbook" up until 1950). This explains the profusion of examples from this work that find their way into Messiaen's literal textbook dating from this period, Technique de mon langage musical.

Considering this, Anthony Pople's handbook on Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps is an excellent entry into the world of Messiaen. Pople amply extracts the most prevalent techniques in this music directly from Technique de mon langage musical (A publication relatively hard to find outside of the university or conservatory library), and elaborates on them.

Due to the length and space (as well as the presumed targeted audience) provided for Cambridge Handbooks, some of the analysis is rather glossed over: the rhythmic and harmonic pedals in 'Liturgie de cristal', for example, do indeed have variation, contrary to Pople's explanation of these cycles. To Pople's credit, he points out one of the instances of this in the rhythmic pedal of the cello.

As this may only occur in the first printing of this book, the following may be excused if it has been corrected in subsequent editions. In the Appendix that cites the modes of limited transposition, there is a mistake in the example of Mode 7. The correct version in C transposition is C, Db, D natural, Eb, F, F#, G, Ab, A natural, B (enharmonically spelled). Although this may seem like nitpicking, The suggestion will surely be helpful to the frustrated student trying to realize the 6 proper transpositions to no avail. This is obviously a misprint, as Anthony Pople correctly cites the mode in his paper "Messiaen's Musical Language: An Introduction", in The Messiaen Companion.

Overall, this is a wise place to start in any study or appreciation of Olivier Messiaen's music, and Anthony Pople should be commended for this exceptional work.

A heady musicological analysis that reveals a work of great cleverness

Anthony Pople's work on Olivier Messiaen's war-time masterpiece "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" is, like all entries in the Cambridge Music Handbooks series, a rigorous musicological examination.

The introduction of the work gives some background on Messiaen, speaking about his life and earlier works (useful for understanding where some of the material of the fifth movement came from). The the Quatuor's creation, within the Stalag prisoner-of-war camp in Nazi Germany, is legendary and receives some discussion here, although those hoping for even more information on the setting should turn to Rebecca Rishin's "For the End of Time: The Story of the Messiaen Quartet" (Cornell University Press, 2003).

Each of the eight movements of the Quatuor has its own chapter, and the analysis differs based on the special properties of each. For example, form and colour are the focus of the second movement ("Vocalise..."), while birdsong is the major topic of the third ("Abime des oiseaux"). The quartet was written as Messiaen was conducting the experiments that led to his early book "Technique", and Pople carefully charts the innovations of rhythm and pitch that Messiaen was developing at this time. As with all entries in the CMH series, quotations from the score abound.

If you have some musical training, Pople's book will vastly expand your appreciation of the "Quatuor". I went from thinking it a juvenille work compared to "Des canyons aux etoiles" or "Eclairs sur l'aux-dela" to seeing it as a piece of marvellous ingenuity.
