This is one of the best-written engineering textbooks I have read as an engineering student. Writing is as easy-to-read without being too casual and covers just enough of the technical information. Examples are relevant to the text.

If it were my choice, I would not teach from this book.

I was the teaching assistant for an introductory Power Systems class last semester that used this book, and I would not recommend it. For starters, this book lays a poor foundation of the basic concepts of three-phase power and complex power. In addition, some sections of the book are VERY confusing, even as some one who already has a degree in the material. Example problems are weak, and the problem solving in the solutions manual (which can be viewed with a quick search of the web) is not straightforward, often employing "cookbook" problem solving methods. The biggest deficiency of this book is it's weak explanation of magnetic circuits.

For electric machines (and magnetic circuit theory), I suggest Electric Machinery by Fitzgerald. For power systems analysis (which this book didn't really go into), I liked Power Systems Analysis and Design by Glover, whose cover Chapman seems to have ripped off. I prefer my old class notes' explanation of the fundamentals of complex power and three-phase power better than either of these, but they are both better than Chapman.

So far the book has been ok in my machines and power fundamentals course, mostly though because my instructor is completely useless in this field. Some things I have seen before and the book offers a more thorough explanation of concepts although the approach in the problems is not usually the one most easily seen by me. That being said, I do praise the book for its numerous examples and detail. The Matlab examples don't really make use of its abilities but they're still helpful.

About the Author
Stephen Satchell is a Fellow of Trinity College, the Reader in Financial Econometrics at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College, City University Business School and University of Technology, Sydney. He provides consultancy for a range of city institutions in the broad area of quantitative finance. He has published papers in many journals and has a particular interest in risk.

Interesting and well put together, but very "British" in its writing style and references, may not be as useful to a US centric investor. Also, some collectibles were heavily overweighted, and some left out. Still, a dense amount of quality material.

Useful look at collecting for fun and, sometimes, profit

Financial advisers and money managers are comfortable with traditional investment vehicles, such as stocks and bonds and, perhaps, real estate. However, an increasing number of wealthy individuals are exploring alternative avenues for profitable investing, including collectibles. Consequently, investment houses and wealth managers need to familiarize themselves with art, stamps, wine, books, classic cars, and the like, to be qualified to advise clients who want to know if their acquisitions will bring in a pretty penny or not. Editor Stephen Satchell's compilation of scholarly essays from a variety of experts on different collectibles - and on the psychology that motivates purchasers - is not a casual read, but it sure is a useful one for money managers whose clients want to cash in Grandma's stamp collection. Much of the material deals with sophisticated economic and business theory, including mathematical formulas and detailed charts and graphs. Still, getAbstract believes that most financial advisers (and collectors) will emerge with a greater understanding of collectible investments - and maybe a hankering for a cherry red and white 1957 Chevrolet.

This book was okay

The pictures in this book were too cartoony and 1990s for what I was looking for. I was hoping for a look at more of today's videogame characters as I thought it would help out my brother with his drawing and computer illustrating techniques. So, unless you are looking for old school cartoons, you do not want this book.

Looking for the Meaning of Life?

This book is a wonderful read for anyone who wonders, worries or agonizes about the meaning of life, and whether they're doing it "right." Psychotherapist Kopp wrote this book in 1972, but it still works today.
Whether giving or receiving therapy, this book reminds us that we are all humans -- nobody has all the answers. The eschatological laundry list (which I've seen roaming around the web, but never attributed to Kopp) has become a classic.
1. This is it! 2. There are no hidden meanings
3. You can't get there from here, and besides, there's no place else to go
4. We are all already dying and we'll be dead for a long time.
5. Nothing lasts!
6. There is no way of getting all you want.
7. You can't have anything unless you let go of it.
8. You only get to keep what you give away.
9. There is no particular reason why you lost out on some things.
10. The world is not necessarily just. Being good often does not pay off and there is no compensation for misfortune.
11. You have the responsibility to do your best nonetheless.
12. It is a random universe to which we bring meaning.
13. You don't really control anything.
14. You can't make someone love you.
I'll stop there -- there's more in the book, and if you find the list discouraging, you need to read the book. If you find the words encouraging, you need to read the book. Add it to your list of books to give friends who are feeling glum and hopeless.
Use it as a group discussion book!
After reading this (at different stages in my life), I still find it centering and soothing. A good addition to the self-help library, along with The Road Less Traveled.

Literate discussion of the freedom born of self-knowledge.

The subtitle, "The Pilgramage of Psychotherapy Patients," belies the essence of this highly literate hymn to authenticity and self-governance: each of us must look within to find our own answers. Drawing from the Bible, the I Ching, Siddhartha, Jung and too many others to name, the author urges that living fully requires us to let go of concepts of fairness, perfection and control and embrace the uncertainty and ambiguity of our journey. A liberating, thought provoking paean to autonomy, self acceptance and personal growth. Life Changing!

Who is The Buddha?

It is easy for anyone to believe that it is always that other person - that one who knows something that we don't know; has something that we have given up on obtaining; or, looks like what we think is the best.
Killing the Buddha is looking deeply within ourselves, accepting our limitations, our attributes, and everything in between. We are the experts in the journey of our own lives. No one else is.
